The command staff exercises codenamed “East-2007” entered an active stage in the Russia’s Far East on Monday. Chief of the Russian Armed Forces General Staff Col.-Gen. Yuri Baluyevsky is in command of this drill that was launched on Sunday, the temporary press center of the command staff exercises in the Far East Military District told Itar-Tass on Monday. Under the scenario the tasks of the military command in the Far East Military District become more complicated. “Their fulfillment demands extraordinary decisions on the organisation of territorial and civil defence, the command of troops during the elimination of terrorist groups and organisations, the destruction of their bases and arms depots and on a comprehensive logistical support of the troops in the military district,” the press center reported. “A broad range of measures are being taken to eliminate the aftermath of humanitarian, ecological and man-made disasters in the Far East Federal District. The command staff exercises will focus on preventive and retaliatory measures in combating terrorism, arms smuggling and drug trafficking,” the press center said. The command staff exercises will last until November 3. The command and the troops, operative groups of the Interior Ministry, the Federal Security Service and the Emergencies Ministry in the Far East Federal District are participating in the drill. The exercises are aimed at improving cooperation between executive authorities and all power-wielding agencies. Under the scenario “the fulfillment of a great number of measures is aimed at resolving tasks of development and training of the Armed Forces,” the command of the exercises said.
