President Vladimir Putin’s decision to head the United Russia Party election ticket gives the Communist Party even more chances to score success at the upcoming Duma elections
President Vladimir Putin’s decision to head the United Russia Party election ticket gives the Communist Party even more chances to score success at the upcoming Duma elections, communist leaders believe. “Whereas formerly only three or four parties could vie for Duma mandates, the configuration of political forces is different today,” First Deputy Chairman of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation Ivan Melnikov told a press conference here on Monday. “Now, the political field is definitely split in two: them, the party of power, and us – the opposition,” he stated. Melnikov stressed that this also facilitated the tasks of the canvassing campaign. Touching on the main slogan of the United Russia Party, that is on “The Putin Plan – Victory of Russia”, Melnikov reported that the Communist Party was prepared to issue its own new slogan – “The KPRF Plan – Plan of the People”. Distinct from the blue and white billboards of the United Russia Party, the communists will have red and white boards. “This will stress the alternative, which the Communist Party is offering the electorate,” the chief party ideologist explained. “We are not planning to set the electors at loggerheads with anybody. We have our own realistic alternative program for the country’s development,” Melnikov underscored. In turn, Communist Party Leader Gennady Zyuganov is sure that the socialist idea is cherished by the majority of the country’s population, who are perfectly aware of the heritage of the October Revolution. “Twenty- first-century socialism is knocking at our door,” he declared. One of the key ideas of the communist “Plan of the People” is to nationalize the principal sectors of the national economy. Zyuganov said his party was determined to revert after the elections to the idea of holding a referendum on the 17 most important problems of the nation. “We shall broach this theme again after the elections and nationalization will be one of the key problems,” he stated. Referring to the conclusions of sociologists, the communist leaders are now stressing that the majority of the country’s population are in favour of nationalizing the natural resources and the key sectors of the economy. “More than 70 percent of them are in favour of a planned market economy or even of a Soviet-model planned economy,” Melnikov stated. Referring to data released by the Levada Centre, he noted that the so-called “Soviet model” is backed by 38 percent of Russians.
