For the first time, the Russian women's soccer team has won the right to take part in the World Youth Championship, which will be held in Thailand in November
Vice President of the Russian Association of Women's Soccer Olga Timofeyeva said in the interview with RIA Novosti that the Russian team had won the right because of its successes in the European Championship in Finland. "This is the first time in the history of women's youth soccer, we took part in the European Championship," Ms. Timofeyeva said. "And the same can be said about the World Championships." "The first group match, which we lost against the Italian national team 1-5, really upset us," she said. "The second match against France ended in a draw, 1-1, but we won 3-0 against the very strong team Norway, which was a European champion." Success during the group stage allowed the Russian, Italian, Spanish, and German teams to advance to the semi-finals. "We will play the next match on August 5 against Germany," Ms. Timofeyeva said. "This is a very strong team. Yesterday, it defeated Spain, 7-0." In her opinion, even if the Russian team fails to win the semi-finals, their participation in the European Championship in Finland can still be viewed as very successful. "Unfortunately, our women's youth team does not have many fans," she said, "but we hope that after its successes in Finland, the interest in the team will grow."
