The 2nd international choral music festival The Singing World has gotten underway in St. Petersburg
The idea behind this festival is to popularize the art of choral singing by bringing vocalists from all across the world to Petersburg audiences and promoting collaboration between local choirs and their counterparts elsewhere in Russia and beyond, the organizers say. This time around, six concerts will be held within the festival's framework, to feature amateur as well as professional performing groups from Russia, Ukraine, Greece, Italy, and Germany. St. Petersburg's lovers of choral singing will have an opportunity to listen live to a Regensburg-based German chamber choir, led the Petersburg Conservatory alumnus Angelica Achter; Italy's Coro Lavaredo di Padova; Greece's Municipal Choir of Paleo Faliro; a folk chamber choir of spiritual music from the Ukrainian town of Glukhov; and the State Choir of the Republic of Mari El, in Russia. At a ceremony in the Peter and Paul Cathedral, participants in the Singing World festival will be presented with souvenir medals coined by St. Petersburg's Mint especially for the occasion. And at a closing ceremony August 11, they will be offered diplomas and gifts, such as decorative wares and gems. The main venues will include the Smolny Cathedral, the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul, the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of SS. Peter and Paul, the Gatchina imperial palace, the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Catherine.
