Economic Minister Ruslan Pliev of the unrecognized republic of South Ossetia is missing
"Pliev's car has been discovered near the Georgian village of Kekhli," Irina Gagloeva, chair of the South Ossetian press and information committee, said in a telephone interview. "A search and an investigation have begun." Investigators have two main theories about his disappearance. "First, the driver lost control of the car," she said. "An act of sabotage is also a possibility." Investigators found that Mr. Pliev was last seen of between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. on August 9, she noted. South Ossetia has not ruled out that this was a new act of provocation by Georgia. "According to operative information," she said, "Georgia is going to stage acts of provocation in the northern part of the city of Tskhinvali and nearby road." On Tuesday night, two villages in the conflict zone were fired on. "From 2:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. Prisi heights was randomly fired on from the Georgian village Eredvi," Ms. Gagloeva said and added that no one was reported dead or wounded but the locals spent the night outdoors. Alexander Sukhitashvili, the local police chief of the Shida Kartly province (inner Georgia), reported that on Tuesday night, Eredvi was fired on from the Prisi heights. "Last night the positions of the Georgian interior forces in Eredvi came under fire from the South Ossetian side," he said, "actually the area of the Prisi village." Mr. Sukhitashvili did not say whether the Georgian interior forces returned fire. Meanwhile, the Georgian Interior Ministry has begun to search for Mr. Pliev. "We were asked to help in the search for Pliev and have begun searching in the conflict zone controlled by Georgia," Mr. Sukhitashvili said. The Georgian state minister for settling conflicts' staff said that the Mr. Pliev went missing in an area controlled by South Ossetia.
