Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said that he hoped to resume relations between the Russian and Georgian Defense Ministries
"I believe that our meeting will help resume cooperation," he said at a meeting with Georgian Defense Minister Georgy Baramidze, "and result in specific efforts to restart relations between our Defense Ministries." Mr. Ivanov recalled that the Russian and the Georgian sides tried to establish relations in this sphere in Moscow early this year. "So far," he said, "we have not clearly established a system of bilateral relations between our departments." In this connection, he expressed the hope that the current talks would help resume the discussion of the issues and problems that do not require any tremendous efforts. Mr. Baramidze assured his Russian counterpart that his country's leadership intended to solve the amassed problems, with mutual respect and consideration of the two countries' national interests. "I want to assure you that the Georgian president and government," he said, "and the Defense Ministry are very serious, and are resolved to address the amassed problems." "We intend to solve all the issues," noted Mr. Baramidze, "no matter how acute they seem at first, respecting each other and proceeding from the national interests. Our national interests are at least 95% interconnected."
