The number of credit card related crimes is increasing in Moscow
The number of credit card related crimes is increasing in Moscow, representative of Moscow's Main Interior Department's Economic Crimes Branch, Major Konstantin Ryzhkin, told journalists on Wednesday. According to him, more than 50 criminal cases on this kind of crime were launched in Moscow during the first seven months of this year, while only 33 criminal cases linked with the illegal use of credit cards were opened during the same period of 2003. He noted that criminals had developed new ways of committing these crimes recently. "Along with withdrawing money from bank accounts through trade establishments and cash machines," he said, "criminals have started using casinos to withdraw money from bank accounts. They buy chips in casinos on fake, stolen or lost credit cards, and then cash them in." He said that in this manner, the criminals "avoid the most complex and dangerous stage of their crime - using the stolen card - and this makes the criminals more difficult to catch." According to him, credit card fraud is one of the most difficult kinds of crimes to prosecute and added that such crimes were generally committed by organized groups with effective distribution of roles. He also said that fake cards were made with professional printing equipment.
