The Baltic Seasons arts festival opens in Kaliningrad on August 17
The three-year unprecedented cultural event is dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the Kaliningrad region and 750th anniversary of Kaliningrad (Koenigsberg), which was founded in 1255. Organizers disputed whether they should celebrate the 60th anniversary of Kaliningrad or the 750th anniversary of the founding of the Prussian town Koenigsberg. In November 2003, the Russian president signed a decree "On the Celebrations of the 60th Anniversary of the Kaliningrad Region and 750th Anniversary of Kaliningrad" thus putting an end to the disputes. These memorable events launched major anniversary events. The Baltic Seasons art festival is the highlight of the celebrations. The Baltic Seasons comprise operas, musicals, theatre, film (Baltic Debuts) and folk art festivals, which will be held in the Kaliningrad regional drama theatre, Sovetsk, Svetlogorsk and the Baltic naval base. The Bolshoi Theatre, the Chekhov Moscow Art Academic Theatre (MKhAT), Lenkom and other popular theatres will participate in the festival. Artists from the Baltic States and Europe will take part in the Baltic Seasons in 2005. The festival's main idea is wide culture cooperation and unification with Europe.
