At least four people were killed and seven hospitalized after a U.S. Black Hawk military helicopter crashed in the northeast of Italy, the mayor of Treviso said on Thursday.

Witnesses say the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter, which belonged to the U.S. Air Force base in Aviano, suddenly went down with its tail up and crashed to the north of the city of Treviso, near the Piave River.

Mayor Vittorio Capocelli said that the condition of three of the survivors was serious.

Earlier Italian media reports said that five people had been killed in the crash.
