Russia is a part of NATO in the future
German Defence Minister Peter Struk would like to see Russia among NATO’s full-fledged members. In an interview with the newspaper Welt am Sonntag on Sunday he stressed the high level of mutual trust that formed between the defence ministers of Russia and Germany. A big progress was made in this field, the German minister emphasised. “At a meeting within the NATO framework my Russian colleague told us about the plans of a reform of the Russian Armed Forces,” Struk remarked. Commenting on a statement of new NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer on the need to strengthen the NATO role in Iraq Peter Struk said, “We will train Iraqi officers if they want to. However German soldiers will not stay in Iraq.” He noted that the German government still refuses from Bundeswehr’s involvement in Iraqi operations.
