The reconstruction of the Vjartsilja railway frontier checkpoint at the border with Finland will start in 2005
The reconstruction of the Vjartsilja railway frontier checkpoint at the border with Finland will start in 2005, a spokesman for the public relations service of the Oktyabrskaya Railway said. The implementation of the reconstruction project will take five years. The Russian Railways Company will allocate about one billion rubles ($1 approximately 29 rubles) for this purpose. According to the service spokesman, it has been planned to organise regular passenger traffic on the route connecting Petrazavodsk, Vjartsilja, Niirala and Joensuu. The plan is supposed to include an automated system of checking trains and their cars and the construction of administrative buildings to house railway staff members, the Customs, the Frontier Service, the Sanitary Inspectorate and other state services. A unified local information network will be created for communication purposes. All these measures will make it possible to speed up the Customs' inspection of trains and the border crossing capacity, the service spokesman said. The Vjartsilja station is located in the section of the Russian-Finnish border that crosses Karelia. This part of the border makes it possible for the Oktyabrskaya Railway to have access to the railways of the European Union, the public relations service points out.
