PACE has called for the immediate release of the schoolchildren taken hostage
Peter Schieder, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), has called for the immediate release of the schoolchildren taken hostage by a group of Chechen militants in the Russian republic of North Ossetia. In a statement released Wednesday by the PACE's Strasbourg headquarters, Schieder describes the hostage-taking in the Ossetian city of Beslan as an appalling and unjustifiable act. He says the Assembly will be willing to assist Russian authorities in reaching a peaceful settlement of the standoff. The PACE President has also denounced Tuesday's suicide bombing in the capital of Moscow, which left ten people dead and fifty others injured.
