New Russian champions Zenit St. Petersburg face Everton in England
New Russian champions Zenit St. Petersburg face Everton in England on Wednesday evening needing a victory to be certain of a place in the last 32 of the UEFA Cup.

The match, which will be Zenit's last of 2007, comes a week after the club squandered the chance to seal qualification in a 2-2 home draw with the German side Nurnberg, conceding an equalizer with just six minutes on the clock.

Everton have so far won both of their matches in Group A, beating Greek side Larissa 3-1 at home and Nurnberg 2-0 away. Victory against Zenit will guarantee the English Premier League side a place in the next round irrespective of the result of their last match, away to Dutch side AZ on December 20.

Zenit's opening game in the group saw a 1-1 draw at home to AZ, the club then going onto defeat Larissa 3-2 away before last week's draw with Nurnberg.

A draw, or even, theoretically, a defeat, might still see Zenit progress to the last 32, but the side, coached by Dutch trainer Dick Advocaat, will not want to leave anything to chance.

Zenit won the Russian championship for the first time since the collapse of the Soviet Union, and only the second in their history, in early November.
