Annual fishing quota system may be canceled in Russia
Russian Agriculture Minister Alexey Gordeyev who is on a working tour over Sakhalin island urged that a special federal law should be adopted to regulate fishing and cancel the annual fishing quota system, the press service of the regional government said on Tuesday. In Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, the minister gathered top executives of the Federal Agency for Fishing and Presidential Envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District Konstantin Pulikovsky for a meeting to discuss problems the fishing industry is facing. On the previous day Gordeyev and his team had visited the fishing factory in the village of Malki in the southeast of the island. The Malki factory has replenished a unique seed stock of Sakhalin "green" sturgeon (Acipenser medirostris Ayres) that is on the Russian and international endangered species list. In addition, the plant, one of 25 such businesses on the island, breeds taimen, calico salmon, and other salmon species. According to Sakhalin region Governor Ivan Malakhov, the island's enterprises account for 75% of young salmon production in the Russian Far East.
