Sergei Lavrov view as inappropriate the statement by the US Stgate Department
Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, and Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II view as inappropriate the statement by the US Stgate Department on continuation of meetings with Chechen separatists. They expressed such opinion on Wednesday when after their meeting they answered correspondents' questions. "We consider such statements inappropriate. Similar statements do not contribute to the process of the development of relations between Russia and the USA and the unity of the anti-terrorist coalition," Lavrov said. "If the Stgate Department meant those figures whom Russia accuses of involvement in terrorism, the US authorities know very well our stance on this issue", the Russian Foreign Minister said. "We have already expressed our attitude with regard to the court in Boston, which granted a status of political refugee to Ilyas Akhmadov, whose involvement in the terrorist activity is well known to them," the minister said. Statements by the press secretary of the US State department that he will meet with those who are coming out "for independence of Chechnya and will seek political decisions' fails to reflect the line which is needed within the framework of the current level of Russian-US relationship," Lavrov said. "As for our internal problems we will solve them ourselves. There is no need for the Americans to look for ways of the political settlement in Chechnya," the minister stressed. In his words "the settlement in the Chechen Republic is under way, this process will develop despite all attempts by international terrorism to undermine it and threaten the territorial integrity of the Russian Federation." In his turn, Patriarch Alexy II said that he "fully shares the stance of the head of the Foreign Ministry." "I think that we will solve all internal issues ourselves," said the Patriarch. "Those leaders of the Chechen republic who pose today as champions of [Chechnya's] independence have caused so much grief and sufferings to our country that I think that at least now when we are in mourning [for the Beslan victims] and are pooling all our efforts to counter terrorism they (the US State Department's statements) are inappropriate," the Patriarch said.
