MiG has resumed a project involving the batch production of the Tu-334 passenger plane,
A Russian aircraft-manufacturing corporation, MiG, has resumed a project involving the batch production of the Tu-334 passenger plane, which it will take to a tender in Aeroflot. The winner will get the contract for the production of 50 regional aircraft for Aeroflot. The design of the short-range Tu-334 liner began in the Tupolev design bureau in 1986, and MiG joined the project in 1999. The plane was to become its first civilian project and launch the diversification of the corporation, which specialized in light fighters in Soviet times. According to Igor Kalygin, general designer of the Tu-334, the first of the planes to be assembled in Lukhovitsy will be turned over to the KavMinVodyAvia airlines for experimental exploitation. The first commercial user of the aircraft should be Atlant Soyuz controlled by the Moscow government. MiG hopes the project will attract substantial funds from the Moscow government and is ready to sign a $80 million loan agreement with the Bank of Moscow. Meanwhile, the Tu-334 has at least one major drawback, which hinders its access to the world market: its engines do not meet the noise requirements which ICAO recommends enforcing on January 1, 2006. This means that the Tu-334 will have to improve or replace its engines as soon as it is supplied to the market.
