Seyed Mohammad Khatami of Iran will pay an official visit to Belarus
President Seyed Mohammad Khatami of Iran will pay an official visit to Belarus from September 9 to 11, Andrei Savinykh, press-secretary of the Belarussian Foreign Ministry, told a news briefing. Mr. Khatami will discuss with the country's leadership the full spectrum of Belarussian-Iranian relations and most of the pressing issues of the international agenda. He is expected to make a report on "Dialogue of Civilizations" in the National Academy of Sciences before members of the country's scientific community. In the course of his visit the president of Iran is scheduled to sign an interstate treaty on the fundamentals of relations and principles of cooperation between Iran and Belarus. The sides will also sign a number of intergovernmental agreements on cooperation in culture, art, sports, tourism, customs, and farming, and coordination of efforts in security and emergencies. As reported by the Foreign Ministry of Belarus, Belarussian-Iranian trade and economic relations are marked by dynamic development. Trade rose to $21.4 million in 2001 (from $89,000 in 1993). Belarus exports to Iran traditionally exceed imports from the Islamic republic. Main items of Belarussian exports to Iran are synthetic fiber, potassium fertilizers, artificial complex threads, ethylene polymers, electronic integrated circuits, metal products, rolling bearings, tractors and commercial vehicles. Main imports from Iran are foodstuffs (tomato paste, spices, fruit and dry fruit), plastic goods, and medical articles. Iran is assembling MAZ trucks and considering the organization of Belarus tractor assembly. Measures are being taken to increase exports from Belarus's petrochemical complex and to promote Belarus road-building and quarry equipment on the Iranian market.
