Russia and China refer the humanitarian cooperation to key components of the entire complex of Russian-Chinese relations
This was stated on Tuesday by Russian vice-premier Alexander Zhukov at a session of the Russian-Chinese Commission on Cooperation in Health Care, Education, Culture and Sports, which is being held in Moscow. The Chinese side is represented by member of the PRC State Council Chen Zhili. "Humanitarian cooperation helps to form a sound social and cultural base of our partnership and strategic interaction," Zhukov stressed . The vice-premier noted that blueprints of cooperation in education until 2008 have been agreed upon. In particular, joint post-graduate courses at the Lomonosov Moscow State University and the University of Beijing, as well as at the Far Eastern State University and the Heilongjiang University need attention and support. The Russian vice-premier also said that Russia and China would promote the study of the Russian language in China and the Chinese language in the Russian Federation. "Quite recently this issue was the domain of a sufficiently narrow circle of organizations and people whose activity was linked with China and Russia. Today large-scale cooperation embracing all spheres was established and is rapidly growing. In these conditions the teaching of Russian and Chinese is acquiring exclusive importance as far as politics, economics, science and culture are concerned," Zhukov said. "In this connection efforts aimed at concluding an Agreement between our countries on supporting the Russian language in China and the Chinese language in Russia should be continued," stressed the vice-premier. Zhukov also paid attention to Russian-Chinese cooperation in health care, which, in his words, is developing dynamically. "About 500 students from the People's Republic of China (PRC) study at Russian medical institutions of higher learning, with 300students out of this number studying in the Far Eastern regions of Russia," the vice-premier said. Sports is also a priority sphere of Russian-Chinese cooperation. "With the Athens Olympics just over, the preparations are actually under way for the summer 2008 Olympics in Beijing. In this connection it is necessary to step up interaction between the Olympic committees and the sports federations of the two countries, with the exchange of experience helping to better prepare for the new games, Zhukov said. The Russian vice-premier also stated that cooperation between the two countries' media has grown considerably. "Contacts were established and an agreement signed on cooperation between a number of news agencies, TV and Radio channels of Russia and China and a few joint projects are being implemented," Zhukov stressed.
