The new Tupolev Tu-334 short-range passenger airliner has received its noise-level certificate
This seems to be a highly important event for the entire Russian aircraft industry. You see, sectoral enterprises, as well as local airlines, are pinning high hopes on this plane, which is expected to phase out the Tu-134 workhorse. The new passenger airliner's basic model, i.e. the Tu-334-100, has a range of up to 3,150 km, what with its tourist version seating 102 people. The Russian aircraft industry is now busy mastering batch production of these aircraft. According to experts, the Russian market alone will require an estimated 122 Tu-334-s by 2010. Quite a few airlines from former Soviet republics and other countries of the world are really interested in the new plane. The Tu-334 air-frame features numerous state-of-the-art metal alloys and composite materials. New materials and advanced technologies made it possible to build an extremely durable, albeit relatively light, air-frame. As far as power-plants are concerned, the Tu-334's fuel efficiency totals 22.85 grams per each passenger-kilometer. It should be mentioned for comparison's sake that a B-737-500 airliner's fuel efficiency stands at 24.5 grams per every passenger-km. Meanwhile the break-down for the B-737-600, the B-717-200, the F-100 and the BaE-146 is 23.0, 24.6, 25.3 and 26.8 grams, respectively. The Tu-334's maximum take-off mass is 47.90 tons, whereas that of the F-100, the A-318 and the B-717-200 is 44.45, 59.0 and 53.53 tons, respectively. The Tu-334 has a rated commercial range of 3150 km; meanwhile the range of the afore-said three foreign airliners totals 2,680, 2775 and 2,270 km, respectively. Moreover, the Tu-334 is renowned for its relatively low operation-and-maintenance expenses, completely matching present-day and long-term environmental standards, i.e. external and passenger-compartment noise levels, as well as low toxic emissions. The basic Tu-334-100 model is currently being mass-produced; for its own part, the Tupolev company keeps developing modified Tu-334 versions, which will completely unveil this aircraft's impressive potential.
