The East-West "21st Century's New Cinema" 1st international Eurasian film festival of the CIS and Baltic States will be held in the ancient Russian city of Smolensk (Russia's west) from September 25 to 30, well-known film director Gennady Poloka, deputy chairman of the Russian Filmmakers' Union, told a press conference on Wednesday. "We decided to create a festival presenting films of all constituent republics of the former Soviet Union. We managed to make a big collection of 63 movies of all republics except Turkmenistan," Mr. Poloka said. According to him, two movies, Russian and Games of Butterflies, will present Russia in the main contest program. Moreover, Papa and The Rider Named Death will be shown out of the contest. The festival's program also includes a contest of short films, the show of CIS and Baltic (Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian) movies shot over the last five years and the Debut project. The forum of chief national filmmakers of the CIS and Baltic States will be a highlight of the first Eurasian film festival. They are to discuss key problems of film production and distribution and unification of the legislation in this sphere. Russian Culture and Mass Communications Minister Alexander Sokolov will oversee the forum's activities. Famous producer Vladilen Arsenyev will head the main contest jury. The opening ceremony of the film festival will take place in Sovremennik, Smolensk's largest movie theater, on September 25. The festival will close with Vladimir Mashkov's film Papa.
