The Dmitry Shostakovich 7th international contest of string quartets will be held in the Moscow Conservatory from September 26 to 30
Fourteen bands from Armenia, Belgium, Italy, Kazakhstan, Finland and France are to participate in the contest. Student bands from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Novosibirsk and Petrozavodsk will represent Russia. "The contest is held to mark the upcoming 100th anniversary of Dmitry Shostakovich," chairman of the jury, People's Artist of Russia Valentin Berlinsky said at a press conference on Thursday. According to him, Moscow's Virtuosos state chamber orchestra conducted by Vladimir Spivakov will participate in the contest's opening ceremony in the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory on September 25. Famous quartet musicians Marc Danel (Belgium), Pavel Vernikov (Italy), Dominique de Viancourt (France) and some Russian performers have been invited to the contest's jury. The first contest prize is worth 720,000 rubles ($24,000), second - 360,000 rubles ($12,000) and third - 280,000 rubles ($9,300). The contest, which was founded 17 years ago, has revealed many remarkable string quartets: Eleonora, Dominant, Mozart and Romantik (Russia), Lark (United States), Danaelle (France), Medea (United Kingdom) and Fone-quartet (Italy).
