Georgia's new Cabinet, formed after early presidential polls on January
Georgia's new Cabinet, formed after early presidential polls on January 5, was approved by parliament on Thursday in a unanimous vote of confidence.

The new government includes 17 ministers and five state ministers led by Prime Minister Vladimir Gurgenidze. Three ministers retained their former posts.

Parliament also approved the government's program on global competitiveness of the country's financial sector, aimed at combating poverty and high unemployment.

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili was forced to step down in late November and call early an election after riot police in the capital, Tbilisi, clamped down on opposition protesters demanding his resignation over corruption allegations.

In the January 5 polls, Saakashvili received 53.47% of the vote and was inaugurated on January 20.
