A mortar strike on a militants' camp killed six bandits
Federal reconnaissance spotted the camp yesterday in the Tanghi-Chu valley of the highland Urus Martan district in Chechnya. As federal soldiers came to the site after the shooting, they found presumably six bodies, and scattered remnants of firearms, personal possessions and household utensils. Another camp-two dugouts to shelter ten at a time-was spotted on the wooded Terek bank in the Shelkovskoy district. Soldiers came on five makeshift explosive devices in the deserted camp. Federal police found a high-power home-made explosive device in a cache in the same district, on the Kurdyukovskaya village outskirts, also on the wooded Terek bank. The device, of five mines joined together, was ready to use, an HQ officer said to Novosti. A police divisional inspector found violent death in the village Katyr Yurt, Achkhoi Martan district, last night, reports a republican Interior Ministry officer. Senior Lieutenant Zaipulayev, 45, was going home from his precinct along the village outskirts when several unidentified men opened submachine gunfire on him and threw a grenade. The inspector died on the spot. The tragedy came at about half past nine p.m., Moscow time. Detection is on.
