A man from the city of Novokuznetsk in southwestern Siberia has been arrested on suspicion of shooting dead a man who owed him money through a door peephole, a local police spokeswoman said Friday.

According to investigators, the accused unsuccessfully tried to collect 26,000 rubles ($1,000) owed to him. After getting drunk, he decided to use a hunting rifle to persuade the debtor to pay up, he rang the bell and banged on the door, but nobody answered.

Thinking no one was home he fired the rifle at the door spy hole and lock and left, but later returned with some fuel setting fire to the door.

Neighbors, who smelled smoke, called the fire service and police, who found the flat owner lying dead next to the door, with a gunshot wound to his head.

The man admitted shooting the gun through the door and, if found guilty of murder, will face up to 15 years behind bars.
