The Scientific-Production Association Energomash develops the basically new rocket engine RD-704
The Scientific-Production Association Energomash develops the basically new rocket engine RD-704, firing three fuel components and boosting the efficiency of carrier-rockets, association head Boris Katorgin said on Tuesday. "The basic difference of the engine is its firing three fuel components: hydrogen is added to the conventional kerosene-oxygen propellant mixture," he said. In Mr. Katorgin's words, this will improve the engine thrust and, in this way, increase the mass of the cargo, simultaneously lowering the cost of its orbital delivery. The engine's package design allows its use as the first and second booster stage. In the opinion of Boris Katorgin, three-component engines will find broad use in spaceships of the future. "It is a promising development with a view to the future. A country actively employing this principles will make strides in space exploration," he is sure. The Energomash general director and designer also said that an integrated holding of leading space enterprises on the Energomash basis will be established within six months since their auctioning. The integrated space holding will include, alongside Energomash, the Khimavtomatika design office, Voronezh Machine Works, Ust-Katav Railway Car-Building Factory, Fakel and the Isayev Khimmash design offices. "Other enterprises are likely to join the holding," Mr. Katorgin said.
