On Wednesday Fidel Castro met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Havana
The Cuban leader expressed his interest in the implementation of some joint projects with Russian companies. According to Fidel Castro, joint projects can cover such spheres as car transport, production of medical equipment, development of mineral resources and modernization of the energy sector. Talking to RIA Novosti, Castro and Lavrov expressed satisfaction with the Russian-Cuban political dialogue. According to the Russian Foreign Minister, Fidel Castro informed him about the development plans of socio-economic and health care spheres and shared his views of the situation in Latin America, including integration processes, and developments in the world. Sergei Lavrov expressed Russia's approaches to these issues. "Russia and Cuba come out for the consolidation of collective principles in world policy under the UN central role," he noted. The sides pointed out the importance of this approach for the fight against international terrorism as well as other challenges and threats. Fidel Castro focused on the struggle against poverty, illiteracy and diseases in developing countries, Mr. Lavrov said. In his words, they had a detailed discussion of bilateral trade and economic cooperation between Russia and Cuba and pointed out the prospects of future relations in this sphere. According to the minister, cochairmen of the intergovernmental commission for trade and economic and scientific-technical cooperation are to meet soon to discuss the agenda of the regular session.
