The former Polish president and Nobel Peace Prize winner Lech Walesa
The former Polish president and Nobel Peace Prize winner Lech Walesa has successfully undergone heart surgery, Polish TVN24 said on Friday.

The operation to implant a pacemaker was conducted in the U.S. at the Methodist DeBakey Heart Center, Houston. The operation was described as "routine."

Zbigniew Wojciechowski, an anesthesiologist at the Houston-based center, said Walesa, 64, could be discharged from the clinic on Saturday. The Polish politician also underwent a vascular operation on Thursday.

Walesa, the legendary leader of Poland's first independent trade union, Solidarity, had been complaining of retrosternal pain, labored breathing and fatigue.
