Moscow's airports are to work from this Friday under directions on enhancing security examination of passengers and luggage
Moscow's Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo airports are to work from this Friday under directions on enhancing security examination of passengers and luggage, issued by Alexander Neradko, head of the transport oversight federal service. "It has been since 2003 that, on request from certain air companies, passenger handbags have been examined with special devices, which accounts for an increase in the staff," said Sheremetyevo spokeswoman Angelina Matrosova. In her opinion, the airport's security measures have hardly seen any cardinal changes after Neradko's directions came in force. Most of the security-enhancement measures mentioned in Neradko's directions had been used in the airport since some time, said Sergey Gorbunov, deputy chairman of the East-Line (Sheremetyevo's official management company) board of directors. The innovations include compulsory examination of all the passengers' footwear (which should be taken off, put into a special plastic box and sent for X-raying). The passengers stay waiting for the return of their footwear in one-time slippers, with special mats underneath to prevent the feet from getting cold, specified Gorbunov. Besides, Passengers have to take off overcoats, jackets, thick pullovers and belts. America's Ionoscan-400B helps detecting explosive evaporations. "Only one such device is available but we intend to buy five more to equip all the entrances," noted Gorbunov. He sums up that the October 1 directions for increasing security measures when examining passengers have just added legal force to the already established practices of passenger examination.
