A man in Berlin has been sentenced to seven months
A man in Berlin has been sentenced to seven months in jail for killing his ex-girlfriend's favorite cat, the German magazine Der Spiegel said on Thursday.

The 37-year-old man, identified only as Torsten F, threw the animal from the balcony of his fifth-floor apartment in August last year.

The court said the man had broken Germany's animal protection laws and that "Brutality must be punished."

The murder of the cat occurred soon after the man's girlfriend had moved out, leaving him alone with the animal. The two-year-old cat "died a painful death" in the courtyard of the tower block, the newspaper said.

The killer later tried to defend himself by saying he had "lost it" due to the mess the cat allegedly made in the apartment. According to the German newspaper Die Welt, the man might have been drinking the evening he hurled his feline companion to its death.

Cruelty towards animals has been a criminal offence in Germany since the Animal Protection Law was introduced by the Nazis in the 1930s.
