A grizzly bear attacked and killed his handler at a private
A grizzly bear attacked and killed his handler at a private training facility near San Bernardino, California, local media said on Wednesday.

Rocky, a five-year-old male weighing 320 kg (700 pounds) was working with three handlers in a secure outdoor area, when he suddenly lunged at one of the trainers biting him in the neck. The 39-year-old man died within 20 minutes.

Two other keepers used pepper spray to subdue the animal, and no one else was hurt in the attack.

The bear's fate is still unknown, but animals that maul their handlers are often put to sleep.

The Randy Miller's Predators in Action center keeps grizzlies, lions, tigers, leopards, cougars and wolves and has "a perfect safety record with absolutely no accidents or mishaps," according to its website.

The animals are used in films, TV, advertising and for education purposes.

Grizzly specialists say the bears are prone to sudden attacks while performing routine and repetitive practices.
