Chinese President Hu Jintao is to visit Japan
Chinese President Hu Jintao is to visit Japan on May 6-10 to meet with the country's leaders, the Xinhua news agency said on Tuesday.

A spokeswoman for China's Foreign Ministry was quoted as saying that Hu Jintao would meet with Emperor Akihito and Prime Minister Fukuda Yasuo during his visit. This will be the first visit by a Chinese leader to Japan for over a decade.

President Hu will meet with the "Japanese parliament, political parties and people from all circles to discuss how to promote Sino-Japanese relations and other issues of common concern," Jiang Yu was quoted as saying.

The visit comes amid improving relations between Tokyo and Beijing. Relations had earlier been soured due to former prime minister Junichiro Koizumi's repeated visits to the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo, seen as a symbol of Japanese militarism, and Japan's reluctance to apologize for massacres in the occupied part of China during WWII.
