Russian nuclear power plants and other nuclear facilities remain under increased protection because the danger of terrorism is high
Andrei Malyshev, acting head of the Federal Ecological, Technological and Nuclear Supervision Service, has said. "Work and protection are taking place in two directions - permanent estimation of the level of physical protection and of a possible threat. We permanently keep an eye on them," he said. Malyshev noted that physical protection for Russian nuclear power stations has greatly improved over the last seven years. "I think that their protection is at a high level and meeting the requirements," he said. He added that protection of nuclear power plants permanently increases because terrorists get more and more updated weapons. In 2004 Russian nuclear power facilities registered two times fewer malfunctions than a year ago. "During this time last year [from the start of the year till the present time], 46 malfunctions happened. This year it is 26, or twice as much," he said. These 26 are minor violations and are estimated as zero-level, when radioactivity does not break out, Malyshev noted.
