German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier will arrive in Russia on Monday
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier will arrive in Russia on Monday on a five-day official visit, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

Steinmeier will visit Moscow and St. Petersburg, and will meet with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg on May 13-14.

Germany's top diplomat will also take part in discussions on finding a settlement to the conflict between Georgia and its breakaway province of Abkhazia, as well as talks on Russia's role in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the international controversy surrounding Iran's nuclear ambitions.

The visit comes shortly after Dmitry Medvedev's inauguration as president and Vladimir Putin's appointment as prime minister. The new Russian president is scheduled to visit Germany in June.

Boris Malakhov, spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, told RIA Novosti on Monday that Lavrov and Steinmeier will also discuss the United States' plans to deploy a missile defense shield in Central Europe, as well as NATO's expansion toward Russia's borders.

"In view of Germany's role as one of the most influential NATO and EU member states, we will continue frank dialogue with German partners on a wide range of topics, with a focus on issues where there are differences and nuances in approaches," the diplomat said.

"These include strategic stability in the light of U.S. plans to deploy elements of a national missile defense system in Europe, the consequences of NATO's expansion and the movement of its military infrastructure toward Russian borders for global and pan-European security," he said.

The CFE treaty, the Iranian nuclear problem, the Middle East, the situations in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the fight against terrorism will also be touched upon, Malakhov said.
