Azerbaijan and Russia are carrying out productive cooperation in the fight against international terrorism.
Deputy chairman of the Federation Council's committee for CIS affairs Konstantin Markelov said at a Thursday press conference following the session of the bilateral Russian-Azeri inter-parliamentary cooperation commission. "We point out positive anti-terrorism contacts between our countries," he said adding that Azeri people supported Russians in the fight against terrorism. First Vice Speaker of Azerbaijan's parliament Arif Ragimzade, cochairman of the commission, said, on his part, that "Azeri and Russian special services boasted good contacts and a basis to develop relations". Meanwhile, he protested against accusations of Azerbaijan's assistance to terrorists that are sometimes voiced in Russia. This is not confirmed by any facts, Mr. Ragimzade said. During the commission's session first deputy chairman of the Federation Council's committee for federal and regional policy Valery Kadokhov said that there were preparatory terrorist headquarters in Baku. "We suspect that there are Maskhadov's preparatory headquarters here in Baku. During the Beslan tragedy we tried to find Maskhadov via our spy in Baku. We saw his [Maskhadov's] phone number and the spy named his whereabouts," noted Mr. Kadokhov. According to him, the Russian side sustained great losses and is, naturally, irritated with this fact. After that, some Azeri members of the commission said those accusations were unfounded and claimed the necessity to give concrete facts. Commission's member Asya Manafova said she could contacts Maskhadov on the phone via representatives of Russian structures. According to her, it proves their links with terrorists. Summing up this topic, Konsatntin Markelov said that nobody should take offence. "We do not rule out that terrorists may be acting in the CIS countries, including Russia. It is necessary to create an effective anti-terrorism system," he stressed. Assessing the session, Mr. Markelov noted the progress in the inter-parliamentary commission's work. On his part, Arif Ragimzade said that the commission works in open and friendly atmosphere and can discuss any issues.
