Dmitry Medvedev has arrived in Germany on his first European
Dmitry Medvedev has arrived in Germany on his first European trip since his inauguration as Russian president.

During talks with the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, the two leaders are expected to focus on bilateral relations and international issues, including Kosovo, Afghanistan, and preparations for the upcoming Group of Eight summit in Japan.

"Amid increasingly negative trends in international affairs, a frank dialogue between Russia and Germany is called for and will be continued on a wide range of themes," Russian presidential aide, Sergei Prikhodko, said prior to Medvedev's visit.

The Russian and German leaders will also discuss Russia-EU relations as Moscow prepares to start crucial talks on a new wide-reaching strategic partnership agreement with 27-nation bloc.

Medvedev is also scheduled to meet with Federal President Horst Koehler, as well as representatives of political and business circles.

The agenda for the talks will include cooperation in investment, energy and high technology, as well as strategic security.

Medvedev and Merkel held talks on March 8, as the leader of Russia's largest European trading partner arrived in Moscow. The visit came just six days after Medvedev had won a landslide victory in Russia's presidential elections.

Medvedev, 42, was inaugurated as Russia's third president since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 on May 7, taking over from Vladimir Putin, who was approved as the country's premier a day later.

The president's first foreign visits after his inauguration were to Kazakhstan and China on May 22-24.
