Over 500 Terrorist Attacks Perpetrated in Russia in 2003
MOSCOW, January 20. 561 acts of terrorism were registered in Russia last year, a rise of 55.8% year-on-year. As a Rosbalt correspondent reports, this was announced by Head of the Organized Crime Department of the Russian Interior Ministry Yuri Demidov. He said over 400 of the attacks were carried out in the South Federal District including 386 in the Chechen republic. 'This is due to the ongoing subversive and terrorist activity of rebel groups, who gave up the struggle for an independent Chechnya a long time ago,' Mr Demidov said. 'Now they are just carrying out the plans of international terrorists.' He said that over 200 people were killed as a result of terrorist attacks in 2003 and more than 600 were wounded. The Interior Ministry, the FSB and the Attorney general's office have together managed to solve 86 of the crimes and a number of people have been identified as having involvement in the terrorist attacks that took place in the North Caucasus and in Moscow. Those involved in the crime in Tushino, the explosions on a bus and at the military hospital in Mozdok have all been identified.
