One man was killed and at least 23 people wounded
One man was killed and at least 23 people wounded by stray bullets in Turkey as the country celebrated its victory over Croatia in the Euro-2008 quarterfinals, local media reported on Saturday.

All-night celebrations involving gunfire, despite an official ban on the tradition, ended in a tragedy in Turkey's southeast city of Gaziantep, where a man died of gunshot wounds.

In Istanbul, the country's largest city, 11 people were inadvertently wounded. The life of one man is in danger, the governor's office told reporters.

Twelve other people, including two girls and an elderly woman, were wounded elsewhere in the country.

Authorities have toughened punishment for illegal shooting. Offenders face a prison term of up to three years. In Istanbul alone, 50 people were detained for firing into the air, city authorities said.

The Turks won 3-1 on penalties. They meet with Germany in a semifinal match in Basel, Switzerland, on Wednesday.
