Official launch of the St.Petersburg non-nuclear submarine was held on Thursday at the Admiralteiski Shipyard manufacturer
Its press service said that the fourth-generation diesel electric submarine of the Lada Project is fit for service at any latitude where the ice cover is not continuous. Its cruise capacity is 45 days. The St.Petersburg submarine is about 67 metres long, seven metres wide, draught 6.5 metres. Its has new torpedoes and cruise missiles launched from the torpedo tubes. Their number if six, torpedo ammunition up to 18. The new submarine features a new generation radio-electronic hardware and a comprehensive automatic control system. The noise level has been reduced many-fold, the press service said. For the first time-ever the St.Petersburg submarine has systems ensuring its environmental friendliness, the press release says. The new sub will be passed to the buyer, the Russian navy, for thorough tests. Designed by the Rubin office, the submarine was laid down at the Admiralteiski shipyard in December 1997. The type sub of the fourth generation has been named the St.Petersburg by the decision of the naval commander-in-chief on proposal from the ship-building works, designer and the administration of the city of St.Petersburg
