A woman died on Tuesday when trying to flee her house on the southern Greek island of Rhodes during a 6.3-magnitude earthquake, local police said.

The quake struck at 6:26 a.m. Athens time (03:26 GMT), with its epicenter beneath the seabed to the south of the island, the Institute of Geodynamics at the National Observatory of Athens said.

The woman died in her home in the village of Archangelos after tripping on the staircase and fatally injuring her head during the quake, the village's deputy mayor said. No other casualties have been reported.

Greek experts gave the quake a Richter magnitude of 6.3, while the U.S. Geological Survey put the magnitude at 6.4.
