Six people have been killed in rainstorms in China's Hubei province, and almost 12,000 have been evacuated from their homes, the country's Xinhua news agency said on Wednesday.

The agency said three people were drowned in floods, another two fatally struck by lightning, and one was killed in a house destroyed by torrents in the central Chinese province.

A total of 584,000 people have been affected by the rainstorms which started on Sunday. The Xiangfan City reported precipitation of 27 centimeters (11 inches) over 12 hours on Tuesday.

Meteorologists said the rain will continue on Wednesday.
