Floods caused by heavy rains killed 22 people in western Ukraine from July 23-27, the country's emergencies ministry said on Monday.

"The storms killed 22 people, including six children," the ministry said.

More than 40,000 homes have been flooded and thousands of people evacuated as a result of the floods, the ministry also said.

Fifteen people, including all but one of the children, died in the Ivano-Frankovsk Region. The other seven deaths came in the Chernovtsy Region.

"The situation is very difficult. Ukraine has seen nothing like this for 100 years," First Deputy Prime Minister Oleksander Turchynov said.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko on Sunday declared the regions hit hardest by the floods national disaster areas.
