Viktor Yanukovych has received 40.03% of the vote (10,807,068 votes), and Viktor Yushchenko has 39.16% (10,572,530).
Ukraine's opposition on Tuesday accused Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich and his allies of wholesale cheating in a landmark presidential election, foreshadowing a bitter run-off battle later this month. In a rowdy session of parliament, Yanukovich's allies raucously dismissed the criticism declaring they were confident their candidate would defeat liberal challenger Viktor Yushchenko in the Nov. 21 face-off, informs Reuters. According to Interfax, in the Ukrainian presidential election, based on an examination of 96.6% of the ballots received from polling stations, Viktor Yanukovych has received 40.03% of the vote (10,807,068 votes), and Viktor Yushchenko has 39.16% (10,572,530). These results have been published on the internal website of the Central Elections Commission. The difference between the two candidates is 0.87%. Oleksandr Moroz has received 5.78% of the vote, and Pyotr Symonenko has 5.02%. Each side yesterday accused the other of massive fraud, and many supporters of the Western-leaning Mr. Yushchenko said they were ready to go into the streets if he called on them to do so. Mr. Yushchenko - who claimed victory Sunday night based on "a parallel vote count" that gave him more than 50 per cent of the vote against 27 per cent for Mr. Yanukovich - made no public comment yesterday, and supporters said efforts were being focused for now on the next round. That caused some confusion in opposition ranks, where some had been plotting to force out a regime that Transparency International has repeatedly named one of the most corrupt in the world, informs The Globe and Mail.
