The demolition of the Rossiya hotel that is located in close proximity to the Kremlin and is well known among foreign tourists will begin in summer 2006
The press centre of the Department for the Architecture, Construction, Development and Reconstruction of Moscow said department chief and Deputy Mayor Vladimir Resin had approved the timetable for preparatory works. Before July 2006, the city authorities will have to select an investor, do prospecting and the research of the preparatory period, prepare terms of reference and inspect the building and municipal facilities. The Moscow mayor signed the decree on demolishing Rossiya and building a multi-functional complex on the place in August 2004. Moscow residents and experts do not agree on the project. Mr Resin told reporters that hotel buildings with an overall of 2,000 rooms would be built on the place and will make a single architectural ensemble. A modern concert hall and cinema will replace the old ones, Rossiya and Zaryadye. A modern complex that will fit in perfectly with the heart of Moscow's historical centre will appear on the Moskva river instead of "the grey reinforced concrete box," according to Mr Resin.
