Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov's office rejected on Wednesday media reports
Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov's office rejected on Wednesday media reports that he will resign this fall, three years before the expiry of his current fifth term.

The Tvoi Den tabloid reported that Luzhkov, 71, who has been mayor since 1992 and was last reelected for new four-year term in June 2007, was likely to be replaced by Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov, and would become a senator.

"I am certain that the mayor will work to the end of his term in office. This information is false. In the summer there is a shortage of news items, so such reports sometimes appear in the press," spokesman Mikhail Solomentsev said.

He said that according to different papers, "the mayor resigned ahead of time many times", and that these reports always turned out to be false.

Sergei Ivanov's secretariat dismissed the reports as "just rumors".
