The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor project may be implemented in France
The ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) project may be implemented in France, a representative of the European Commission in Austria speaking on condition of anonymity told reporters on Tuesday. At the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) talks that have started in Vienna between the participants in the project - Russia, the US, Japan, the EU, China and South Korea, - France and Japan are competing for the right to have the ITER built on their territory. According to the representative of the European Commission, "France is weighing down the balance." However, the Japanese representative, Satoru Ohtake, has said, "We see no reason for changing our position that ITER should be built in northern Japan." The Japanese option is advocated by the US and South Korea. Russia and China as well as the EU believe the ITER project should be implemented in Cadarache, southern France. "We have protracted this issue," Yevgeny Velikhov, the Russian co-leader of the project, told RIA Novosti before the conference in Vienna. "It could have been solved three years ago." In his words, "Russia's role is currently very important, as all these projects are linked to Russia as before." He recalled that ITER was based on the so-called "tokamak" that was first invented in Russia. The first tokamak was built in Moscow in 1955, and the relevant research was conducted for 15 years only in the Soviet Union. It took 16 years to develop the ITER project, and scientists are upset about the delay with the selection of the construction site. A lot of hopes are pinned on this project designed to solve the energy problem worldwide. "We would like to have the thermonuclear station built within 30 years. We should get down to work quickly," said academician Velikhov.
