The Russian women's tennis squad was voted the favorites
The Russian women's tennis squad was voted the favorites to win the 2008 Fed Cup final against Spain on September 13-14 in Madrid, the tournament's website said.

The poll conducted by the tournament's official website said that 81% out of some 3,300 respondents believe that Russia is most likely to win the Fed Cup Final with only 19% voting for Spain, who will enjoy home advantage.

The Russian team, which won the Fed Cup in Moscow in 2004 and 2007 and in Paris in 2005, reached the finals after defeating the United States 3-2 in April, while Spain defeated China 4-1 in the other semifinal match.

The defending champions will be led by World No 4, Svetlana Kuznetsova, 23-year-old Vera Zvonareva, doubles specialist Yelena Vesnina and 20-year-old Yekaterina Makarova.

Spain, who have lifted the cup five times and last won in 1998, will be fielding a squad comprising French Open doubles champion Anabel Medina Garrigues, 20-year-old Carla Suarez Navarro, Nuria Llagostera Vives, 28, and Virginia Ruano Pascual, who has nine grand slam doubles titles under her belt.

Last year both teams met in the quarterfinal with Russia knocking Spain out to go through to the semis and eventually lift the trophy.

The Fed Cup, formerly the Federation Cup, is the leading women's team tennis competition, the equivalent of the men's Davis Cup.
