Dalai Lama has not applied to the Russian Foreign Ministry for a visa
The Dalai Lama has not applied to the Russian Foreign Ministry for a visa, deputy official spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry Mikhail Troyansky told RIA Novosti. "If such an application is received, we shall consider it in accordance with the established procedure," he said. Russia adheres to its principled position on the problem of Tibet, the diplomat noted. "Tibet is China's integral part and its developments are China's domestic affair," Mr. Troyansky emphasized. "The Russian side respects wishes of Russian Buddhists who often asked about the Dalai Lama's pastoral visit to Russia," he stressed. No official contacts with the Dalai Lama who is regarded as a religious figure are maintained, he said. Nevertheless, Kalmykia is getting ready for a meeting with the Dalai Lama. The press center of the committee for the organization of the Dalai Lama XIV's visit to Kalmykia will start working on Thursday. The Dalai Lama is expected to visit Kalmykia from November 13 to 17, the press center's head Nikolai Buyancha told RIA Novosti. According to him, the Dalai Lama's representatives informed Elista that the Buddhist spiritual leader wants to visit Kalmykia and has time for this trip. The Republic of Kalmykia is located between the Volga and Don Rivers and has an issue to the Caspian Sea and the Volga bank. Its population is 330,000 people. The main ethnic groups are Kalmyks (43%) and Russians 42%. Agriculture is the key economic branch.
