Russian forward Roman Pavlyuchenko made his debut in the English Premier
Russian forward Roman Pavlyuchenko made his debut in the English Premier League on Monday evening but was unable to help his new side, Tottenham Hotspur, slump to their third defeat in four games.

Pavlyuchenko, whose three goals in five matches at Euro 2008 attracted the attention of Tottenham manager Juande Ramos, signed for the London club at the end of August in a reported $28 million deal. He replaced Bulgarian star Dimitar Berbatov, who recently moved to Manchester United.

Tottenham made the worst possible start possible in Monday's home game against Aston Villa, going behind in the 4th minute as Nigel Reo-Coker put the finishing touch to a Gabriel Agbonlahor cross.

Pavlyuchenko looked somewhat isolated in attack, and although Tottenham tried to get the ball to him, his only real attempt on goal came in the 21st minute when he turned well in the penalty area only to see his subsequent shot deflected away from goal.

Tottenham made a number of purchases before the transfer window closed on September 1st in an attempt to replace the damage done to the side by the loss of Berbatov and Robbie Keane to Liverpool, but the new signings looked uncomfortable with each other, and in the 54th minute an Ashley Young shot slipped under Tottenham keeper Heurelho Gomes to make it 2-0.

The Londoners managed a late consolation goal through Darren Bent, but it was not enough to save them from their second home defeat in a row and their worst start to a season for 34 years.

We had very little time to prepare," Ramos told the BBC, adding that the new players had had little time to settle. Apart from Pavlyuchenko, Croatian defender Vedran Corluka also made his debut for the club on Monday.
