"It's just addicting," said Brady O'Connell, 22, a college student who joined hundreds of others late Monday night -- and early Tuesday morning -- at the L.A. pedestrian mall Universal CityWalk for the West Coast launch of the new "Halo." Over the next three days, in eight languages and 27 countries, Microsoft will release its most important program of 2004 -- not a new version of Windows or Office, but the epic tale of super-soldier "Master Chief" defending the Earth from a mysterious alien force, informs Reuters. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Miguel Chavez, a 36-year-old father of two boys, waited about 10 hours at a Toys "R" Us in New York City's Times Square to buy his copy of the game. He took along an Xbox console and a projection system so they could play the original "Halo: Combat Evolved" to pass the time. "This is more than just a game for some of us," said Chavez, a self-employed computer consultant. "Productivity in the work force is probably going to go down for the next few days." Millions like Chavez have apparently caught "Halo 2" fever. Microsoft said it had 1.5 million copies pre-ordered, and predicted first day sales of more than $100 million. Three years in the making, "Halo 2" pits super soldier Master Chief against throngs of vicious aliens called the Covenant. "Bill Gates is even richer tonight!" screamed 18-year-old Johann from Brooklyn as he waited to add his $49.99 to the Microsoft kitty. Some fans weren't satisfied with buying "Halo 2" on the first day; they had to buy the game first, period. Paul Girardi and Joe Delea, both 22 and from Staten Island, New York, began their sidewalk sit-in at 10 a.m., some 14 hours before the game went on sale. "We didn't think we would be first, but no one was crazy enough to be here before us," Girardi said, his hair colored bright green in honor of the event.
