Ukraine's pro-presidential party will hold a meeting late on Tuesday
Ukraine's pro-presidential party will hold a meeting late on Tuesday to decide whether to form a new ruling coalition with Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko's bloc, a faction member said.

Ukraine's president, Viktor Yushchenko, spoke earlier on Tuesday against reforming the coalition between Our Ukraine and Yulia Tymoshenko's bloc and said Tymoshenko's party should form a new ruling alliance with either the pro-Russian Party of Regions or the Communists by the end of the day to avoid early parliamentary elections.

"We have heard the president. His position is straightforward - he is against any talks with Tymoshenko's bloc and is in favor of earlier elections," the UNIAN agency cited Taras Stetskyv as saying.

"Our faction must now make a decision on its own," Stetskyv said.

Meanwhile, Borys Kolesnikov, one of the leaders of the pro-Russian Party of Regions, said a coalition with Yulia Tymoshenko's bloc was impossible due to political differences and pledges made to voters during the previous election campaign.

"It would be a deliberate deception of our electorate, and serious politicians would never agree to do that," he said.

The ruling coalition collapsed last month when the president's Our Ukraine quit the ruling alliance with the Tymoshenko bloc. The move followed a vote by lawmakers from the pro-Russian opposition, backed by Tymoshenko's party, to slash the president's powers and over the premier's refusal to support the president's condemnation of Russia's military operation in Georgia.
